AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a gloval nonprofit college-readiness program designed to close the achievement gap and prepare students for higher education.  Targeting "academic middle" students, it places them in rigorous courses and provides a daily elective class focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and critical thinking.

AVID operates across a few core components and methodologies:

• The Elective Course: The heart of the secondary program (grades 6–12) is a dedicated daily class where students learn vital study skills, time management, and receive structured peer tutoring to succeed in their advanced classes.
• WICOR Framework: AVID’s teaching methodology is built around Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. These strategies are utilized not just in the elective, but often school-wide to build critical thinking.
• Student Profile: The program typically targets students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, including first-generation college students and those from the academic middle (averaging B, C, or D grades) who exhibit the desire and motivation to achieve.

 

Title 1

A Title 1 school is a public school that gets extra money from the U.S. government to help students from low-income families. This money helps make sure all students meet state learning goals. You can read more about the official guidelines on the U.S. Department of Education site. 

How Schools Qualify

• Low-income percent: A school usually qualifies if 40% or more of its students come from low-income homes.
• Federal aid: The Department of Education gives this money to states, which send it to local school districts. 

How the Money is Used

• School-wide programs: If 40% or more of the students are low-income, the school can use the money to help all students in the building.
• Extra resources: Schools use the funds to hire more teachers, buy learning tools, offer after-school help, and get families involved.

Canvas

Parents can be Observers of their child's Canvas account.  Canvas is the county's Learning Management System.  It is the same LMS used by major universities, including the University of Tennessee Knoxville.  

To link to your child's Canvas account, follow these directions.

Once you’re linked to your child’s account, you can view:

• 📊 Grades (current + past)

• 📅 Assignments & due dates

• ✅ What’s submitted, missing, or late

• 📝 Teacher feedback on work

• 📢 Course announcements

• 📚 Syllabi and class materials 

 

 

Qustodio

Qustodio is a free service that provides parents with additional resources to supervise school-issued Chromebooks outside school hours. We are pleased to provide these additional digital well-being tools to families. During school hours (7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.), school staff will monitor student activity. Any concerns during school hours should be directed to the teacher or school's administration. 

On nights (4:45 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.), weekends, and school holidays, Qustodio allows families to: 

• Apply custom web filtering,
• Set daily screen time limits,
• Set custom rules for certain days & times such as bedtime & homework time,
• Pause internet access,
• Monitor browsing activity on their student's Chromebook,
• Receive email summaries of usage, and
• Read digital safety guidance from experts.

Families can create an account and connect with their student(s) using the parent email on file in Aspen.
