Arts & Clubs
Whittle Springs Middle School offers several performing arts opportunities, after school and extracurricular opportunities. Through these classes, clubs, and others, students have the opportunity to expand their classroom learning, get to know peers with similar interests, and explore new skills.
Performing Arts
Band
Whittle Springs Middle School offers band for all students in grades 6th-8th. Students may join band in 6th grade and will have the opportunity to try out different instruments before choosing which one they will play in class. Instruments that are taught in class are flute, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Band is a performing arts class and performing is part of the Tennessee State Standards. Students in band will give concerts during different parts of the year after school and may also have opportunities to play in the community.
Chorus
Whittle Springs Middle School offers chorus for all students in grades 6th-8th. Students may join chorus in any grade. Chorus students will learn vocal technique, sight-singing, critical listening, singing in parts, singing along and with small and large groups, and performance expectations. Chorus is a performing arts class and performing is part of the Tennessee State Standards. Students in chorus will give concerts during different parts of the year after school and may also have opportunities to perform in the community.
Clubs
Art Club
Art Club will be held on Fridays from 8:00-8:25 a.m. in library. We have a few spots left. Any interested students should see Mrs. Remington in the library to sign up. We will open registration up again next semester for more dates but will send information out about that at that time.
Cooking Club
The Cooking Club meets on Wednesdays from 3:45-5:15p.m. in room 119. Parent permission is required and there is a limited number of students that can participate. Please check ParentSquare for messages about the Cooking Club and when spots are available.
Gardening
Gardening club meets after school on Mondays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.. This group helps keep our campus grounds looking nice and looks over our community garden in the outdoor classroom. Mrs. Remington sponsors this club. You must have a signed permission slip and must have a ride at 4:30 to participate.
YOKE
YOKE meets on Tuesday nights in the cafeteria starting at 7:00 p.m. Students must go home and then return to the school for YOKE. This club is open to all students and is sponsored by Ms. Spinelli.
Teens for Christ
Teens for Christ meets on Thursday mornings starting at 7:45 a.m. in the gym. Students have the opportunity to choose to attend this club. All students are welcome to attend any of these meetings at any time. This club is sponsored by Mrs. Overley.
Theater Club
Theater Club meets after school in the auditorium once a week. Student learn acting skills as well as how to write their own scripts. This club is sponsored by Mrs. Reeves, and Ms. Clark.
Robotics Club
Students will learn how to design, build, program, and operate robots. Students work in teams to solve hands-on engineering challenges while gaining practical STEM and team-working skills. More information to come on this exciting new club.
Student Council
A middle school student council is an elected group of student leaders who act as a bridge between the student body and the school administration. Theyplan school events, promote spirit, lead community service, and give students a voice in shaping their school culture. More information to come on this exciting new club.
Sports Clubs
KCS middle school community sports have several defining characteristics. These club sports are not officially sanctioned by Knox County Schools, and onsite principals are not involved in personnel decisions regarding coaches. KCS supplemental insurance is not provided for these activities, and they do not primarily or exclusively use school facilities. Community sports also do not have a faculty sponsor, and the schools are not liable for these programs. While these sports compete under the school name, all Whittle Springs Middle School activities that are not listed as recognized Knox County sports or club sports are considered community sports.
Emerald Youth Soccer
Soccer is available through the Emerald Youth Foundation for both boys and girls. Girls play in the Fall and boys play in the Spring. More information can be found on Emerald Youth Soccer.
Emerald Youth Volleyball
Volleyball is available for girls through the Emerald Youth Foundation. More information can be found on Emerald Youth Volleyball
Emerald Youth Golf
Golf is available for boys and girls through the Emerald Youth Foundation. There are Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons. More information can be found on Emarald Youth Golf
